The Pumpkin Patch

“Hurry up, Scott,” Mrs. West urged her thirteen-year-old son. “I have other chores to do.”

“You’ll have to wait,” Scott replied, not bothering to look up at his mother. “I’m not leaving until I’ve chosen the right pumpkin.”

Suppressing her anger, Mrs. West ignored Scott’s disrespectful attitude because it surfaced very rarely. She knew that his polite demeanor disappeared on only one occasion – Halloween; or more specifically, during the process of choosing a pumpkin and carving it.

Scott was a proficient student who received above average grades in most subjects. He had many interests such as playing soccer and hockey. However, he only had one obsession. His obsession with pumpkins had started at a young age from a cause unknown to everyone – even Scott himself. When Scott was too young to carve his own pumpkin, he would spend hours etching a design onto the pumpkin’s skin with a pencil. As Mr. West carved his son’s design, Scott watched in a silent nervousness. When Scott was old enough to carve his own pumpkin, he did so with the precision of a skilled surgeon.

Mr. and Mrs. West had once thought Scott’s passion for pumpkins was cute. They even called him Pumpkin Head every Halloween. However, the nickname and fond references to pumpkins stopped when Mrs. West discovered the scrapbook underneath Scott’s bed. The scrapbook was filled with before and after pictures of his carved pumpkins. The rest of the scrapbook was filled with little plastic bags which contained pumpkin seeds as well as stapled pieces of paper that had pumpkin carving designs on them. Due to the fact that Scott had no other obsessions and he behaved like a normal teenager for the rest of the year, Mr. and Mrs. West decided to accept Scott’s love of pumpkins as a quirk.

It was a cool Sunday morning in late October as Mrs. West waited for her son to choose a pumpkin. Since Mr. and Mrs. West only allowed him to purchase one pumpkin, the selection process was rather tedious.

“I think you’ve searched through every bin, sweetie,” Mrs. West said as calmly as she could.

Mrs. West was standing outside Sylvia’s Gifts and Groceries and in front of five large bins filled with pumpkins. Scott usually purchased a pumpkin at the local supermarket. However, he insisted that they stop here when he saw the vast selection of pumpkins they offered.

“I’ve almost searched through every bin,” Scott corrected her. “I’m still working on the last one.” Suddenly, his eyes widened and his voice trailed off.

“Scott, are you okay?” Mrs. West asked slowly.

“I’ve found the one,” Scott muttered, while staring into the bin. “It’s...it’s so beautiful.”

Perhaps Gregg and I should take Scott’s obsession a bit more seriously, Mrs. West thought.

Scott leaned so far into the bin that he almost fell in. He grunted before revealing a very large pumpkin. Mrs. West hurried to his side with the grocery cart which had remained stationary for the last thirty five minutes. Scott placed the pumpkin into the cart and then smiled widely.
